Institute of Harbor and Hydraulic
Engineering
The Institute was established in 1989. It is mainly based on the
specialty of coastal and oceanographic engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. With
the development of national economic construction, a great many coastal and oceanographic
engineering projects (e.g. harbors, navigational channels, bridges, wave breaker,
reclamation, shipyard, artificial islands, seabed oil pipelines, power plants, oil
platforms, coastal defense and coastal and oceanographic pollution, etc.) are being
undertaken. The international community has paid increasing attention to the exploration
and usage of coastal and marine resources, forming a new subject known as "coastal
oceanography".
The institute has undertaken a lot of scientific and technological
research projects.(For example, Three Gorges shifter, dynamic analysis of submarine
pipeline, etc.).Currently, the institute is undertaking research projects supported by the
National Natural Science Foundation, the State Education Committee, and the Shanghai
Scientific and Technologic Committee. The main research fields of the institute are:
Coastal and estuarine hydrodynamics (wave, current sea
level and salt water intrusion)
Coastal, estuarine and offshore sediment processes
Coastal, estuarine and oceanic pollution
The designation and construction of coastal
architectures, including harbor, dock, etc.
Coastal and estuarine evolution and regulation of
navigational channels
Reclamation of tidal flat
The new technology and methods of coastal and
estuarine field measurement.
