Institute of Ship and Ocean Engineering Hydrodynamics
(Ship Hydrodynamics Laboratory)

The Institute of Ship and Ocean Engineering Hydrodynamics is one of the doctor'‘s degree programs in the first batch approve by the State Council, and is a member of the Advisory Council of International Towing Tank Conference. The institute is engaged in basic and applied research of hydrodynamic characteristics in naval architecture, ocean engineering, port and water conservancy engineering, petrochemical industry, electric, civil and environmental engineering. The research work is focused on computational method, software development and experimental technique, training of highly qualified scientific and technical as well as management personnel .It is the earliest base of education, research and experimental equipment and instrument development in ship and ocean engineering hydrodynamics field in China with a history as long as 37 years.

There are 10 staff members in the institute, including 6 professors (5 doctor advisers among them), 2 associate professors, 1 lecturer and 1 assistant. The institute has compiled or written more than 20 textbooks of undergraduate and graduated level in shipbuilding.10~20 papers are presented or published at conferences and/or in magazines at home and abroad every year. The institute undertakes 10~20 contract projects of basic and applied research, new product development from different state ministries, research institutes, industries annually.

It has accepted several visiting scholars and research cooperators from Japan and Sweden and has sent 8 persons, more than 30 person-times, abroad to lecture, study, or to take part in joint research projects or supervise graduates.

The research or production projects undertaken by the institute from related ministries have made a positive contribution to the academic level and industrial development. For example, the research of wave loading of a offshore platform and its motion response, the floating transportation, barge transportation and launching research of jacket, the capsizing mechanism of offshore platform, the experimental research on hydrodynamic coefficients of manned or unmanned submersibles, the experimental research and simulation of ship maneuverability, the orthogonal experimental research of the rudder form with high effectiveness, the research of ship energy saving methods, the research on utilization of wave energy as hydrodynamic force and wave power generation installation, theoretical investigations into unsteady propeller performance prediction, research on the highly skewed controllable pitch propeller with minimum excitation forces, the computer software development of 3-D source distribution of wave loading for large scaled objects. Particularly, researches on high speed boat performance, large full ship forms, ducted propeller with simplified profile and controllable pitch propeller series, anti-rolling tanks, propeller excitation forces as well as cavitation noise and erosion of submarines and other ship propellers have achieved great success. The institute has won more than 30 advanced science and technology awards from the State Council and its ministries.

The institute has close relationship with towing tank, cavitation tunnel and ocean basin in our college. Experimental investigations can be carried out jointly.

The institute is able to provide following technical services:
*Theoretical investigations and software development of hydrodynamic performances for naval architecture and ocean engineering or other engineering structures.
*Model experimental research, full scale tests of hydrodynamic performances for naval architecture and ocean engineering or other engineering structures.
*Project evaluation and performance design and calculation for all types of ships.
*Design of measuring instruments or equipment for ships or other engineering fluid mechanics.
*Training of senior and intermediate research personnel and experimental technicians.
*Providing technical consultation or part-time consultants.
