Institute of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Structural Mechanics

Institute of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Structural Mechanics (SNAOESM) is developed from the Division of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Structural Mechanics .Now it has a faculty of 28 among which 20 are professors, associate professors or senior engineers, and 4 professors are/were members or chairman of ISSC technical sub-committee.

Authorized by the National Academic Degrees Committee. INAOESM offers doctor degree programs and master degree programs, and has formed the first engineering doctor and first woman-engineering doctor in Shanghai. In 1988,it was approved to be the national key subject, and in 1989 it was appointed to be post-doctorate station. Up to now, it has formed more than 100 masters, more than 30 doctors and several post-doctor fellows.

SNAOESM attaches great importance to developing scientific research activities, including both basic theory and applied technology. Its research scope has being enlarged and adjusted in the last decades, and covers nearly all aspects relevant to naval architecture and ocean engineering, such as ship, submarine, submersible ocean platform, pipe engineering, shore structure etc. presently, the main research directions in SNAOESM are structural dynamics, fluid-structure interaction analysis, computational structural mechanics, fracture and fatigue, optimization for engineering structure, reliability analysis for engineering structure, plastic limit analysis for structure, structure strength, structure test technology etc.. In 90’s,alot of research projects are undertaken, and most of them are supported by the National Natural Science Foundation, the Nation Defense Science and Technology Committee. China Shipbuilding Company and some other big enterprises. Many analysis codes on different ship and ocean engineering structures have been developed, such as the prediction system of structural strength., vibration and stress analysis for large container ship; structural optimization design and analysis system for large tanker; FEM analysis integration system for large tanker ;analysis system for the direct design method on ship structure; strength analysis system for submersible ocean platform; fault diagnose expert system for ocean platform; prediction system for the vibration of warship stern etc.

The research projects in SNAOESM also come from other industry domain for example navigation, satellite, civil skyscraper, waters conservancy engineering. Recently many research tasks related to national key project have been undertaken, such as the study on the dynamic math model for ship lifting of Three Gorges in Yangzi River; the whole static analysis for YUN-7 airplane; study on the strength of high voltage wire; strength and vibration analysis for the Santana car.

The institute has a modern and advanced structural mechanics laboratory. In the middle of 80’s, the laboratory facility was extended. A structural static and dynamic loading system MTS (US) was introduced. Conjugated with two-4900KN/cm2 high-pressure tanks and 9m*15m test platform, the in-time control and analysis with 2 channels can be realized, by which, static dynamic and fatigue tests for large structures can be carried out. Beside, other facilities for experiment include two set instruments of photoelasticity, two sets of data gathering system, electric magnetic exciters from 9.8N to 490N, etc.

In 90's, with the renewing of the structural mechanics laboratory, new equipment and instrument are introduced, including some advanced computer station. ZONIC system of structural dynamic signal gathering and analysis in-time with multi-channel, stimulation device for the multi-freedom sloshing of tanker, static strain gages instrument with multi-channel, portable static strain gage instrument, and many modern structural analysis codes (such as MSC/NASTRAN, MSC/DYTRAN, SYSNOISE, SESAM, SAFEHULL, SHIPREGHT, ANAYSYS etc.). And a comprehensive test and analysis system is formed.

Up to now, more than 20 monographs and textbooks are issued and hundreds scientific papers are published in relevant academic journal. The following research projects are awarded.
