he School of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering of SJTU grew out of the corresponding Department of Naval Architecture established in 1943. The School is now composed of 2 department, 5 research institutes and a state key laboratory, i.e. Dept. of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Dept. of International Shipping, Design Institute of Ship and Ocean Engineering, Institute of Ship and Ocean Engineering Structural Mechanics, Institute of Ship and Ocean Engineering Hydrodynamics, Institute of Underwater Engineering, Institute of Harbor and Hydraulic Engineering and the State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering. The Institute of Marine Engineering and Electrical Equipment is on the way to be established. The Administration Office and Education Affairs Office of the School are in Charge of Dealing with the routine tasks of the School.

The total number of the staff in the School reaches 112, including 25 professors, 27 associate professors, 6 lecturers, 9 assistant,15 senior engineers and senior laboratory engineers,17 engineers,16 technical workers, 9 officials and official assistants.

The School of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering takes the training of qualified personnel in multi-level as one of its main tasks. Besides the undergraduate programs in corresponding specialties, master and doctor programs have been established in the related departments and institutes as well as a post-doctorate program at the school level. Carrying forward the fine tradition of Jiao Tong University for education, the School devotes much attention not only to training of students in basic theory and practical experience, but also to the training of students in quality and ability. Emphasis is laid on strengthening the relevant disciplines and the formation of qualified teacher teams in the School. Academic research echelons with rational age composition, led by well-known professors, have been formed in each corresponding branch of learning.

In order to adapt to the development of the shipbuilding industry and the exploitation of the ocean, extensive basic and applied researches have been actively carried out in the School. The School is also engaged in the corresponding industrial application and development and undertakes many vital research projects for projects for related state ministries and industrial enterprises actively. The research scope of the School covers many important areas, for example, merchant ship and warships, exploitation and production of ocean oil, harbor and coastal engineering, ocean environment and protection, etc.

The School pays great attention to the international academic exchange and scientific research cooperation. The School has become a member of the International towing Tank Conference (ITTC) since 1978 and a member of Advisory Council of ITTC since 1987. Two professors of the School are the technical committee members of the International Ship and Offshore Structure Conference (ISSC). Good relationship for academic and personnel exchanges has been established between our School and a lot of corresponding Schools and/or departments of well-known universities abroad. Recently, the international research cooperation of the School is increasing, and School gets involved in the competition in the international market for science and technology.

With the efforts paid during the past 50 and more years, the School has a world-widely well-known base for qualified personnel train and scientific research with complete branches in the field of naval architecture and ocean engineering, excellent research facilities and powerful ability for education and scientific research. The School is now playing a more and more important role in the development of the shipbuilding industry and offshore industry of China.

Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering

The Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering offers two specialties. i.e. Ship Engineering and Onshore & Offshore Engineering. The specialty of Ship Engineering was established in 1943 while the specialty of Onshore & Offshore Engineering (formerly named as Ocean Engineering) in 1985. For more than 50 years since its founding, the Department has trained a great amount of senior technical and administrative personnel for the different departments of our country, such as the shipbuilding industry, the Navy of P.L.A. the National Defense Committee of Science and Industry, the offshore oil industry, the classification society and the communication and transportation industries.

The Department has a high qualified faculty and abundant facilities, and employs a number of internationally or nationally famous professors represented by Prof. Yang You, an academician of the Academy of Science of China.
In addition to the two undergraduate specialties, the Department also offers two master and doctor stations. i.e. the Design and Manufacture of Ship & Offshore Structure, the Mechanics of Engineering, and a post-doctorate station of the former.

The Department pays attention to the training of students in fundamental knowledge. Besides the study of professional knowledge, the students are also offered special courses in management knowledge, computer skill and foreign language abilities. Through a whole set of teaching and learning practices, the students can have a good understanding of the society, be familiar with the production and value the integration of theory with practice.
The length of undergraduate schooling in the department is four years. During the university time, the students have 34~40 obligatory courses, 12~15 elective courses and 6 courses in moral education.
The graduates from the Department are mainly engaged in various ships and offshore structures research, design, production, survey and trade. They can also undertake shipping management, offshore oil and gas exploration, etc.
In addition, the Department has been authorized to train engineering masters for the large sized national enterprises. An engineering mastership station has recently been established in Dong Ying, a city in Shan Dong Province, and has formally enrolled students from Shen Li Petroleum Administration.

Department of International Shipping

The Traffic Transportation (International Shipping Management) specialty of Shanghai Jiao Tong University was established in 1995 with the approval of the National Education Commission and became a new department of the school of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. In 1997, the first graduates were recruited by the companies including COSCO Shanghai. Shanghai PENAVICO. Guangzhou Shipping Stock Company. Pacific Insurance Company. COSCO Shanghai International Intermodal Limited Company etc. After strict examination and interviews.

The International Shipping is a wide-reaching subject, which relates to Foreign Trade. Insurance. Finance. Law. Politics and wither subjects. The specialty focuses attention not only on professional knowledge training, but also on training students more adaptable to the environment and future challenge through learning and joining social activities. Moreover the International Shipping Computer Center of the department was seen set up to offer a good opportunity for the students to improve their computer knowledge and skills.

As a cradle of excellent administrative personnel, the International Shipping Department, specializing in Ocean Transportation Works. Trade and Operation of Ships and Shipping Economic, educates students with solid bases, practical skills and professional knowledge in Shipping Business. Ship Engineering, International Trade and Laws, Maritime Code, Shipping Management.etc.

Most of the students are engaged in shipping management, international trade forwarder and agent, marine insurance, maritime judgement, etc. After their graduation.

During their four years studying, the students will learn 34 to 40 required courses, 12 to 15 elective courses and 6 moral education courses. In the meantime, they will take part in all kinds of practical activities, three months specialty practice and graduation practice.

To improve the teaching level, teachers of International Shipping Department are diligent both in teaching and research. They can undertake research tasks and training activities regarding Ocean Shipping, Forwarding, Ship Trading and Agent with high quality and efficiency.

Design Institute of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering

The Design Institute of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering is formed by merging the original four divisions, namely, surface warship design, merchant ship design, marine technology and ocean engineering. Owing to its both a high level of ship theory and a wealth of design experience, the institute is one of the master and doctorate station first approved by the State Council. For more than forty years since its founding, the institute has trained a great amount of senior scientific personnel for the national industries of shipbuilding, communication and transportation, navy equipment, ocean development, etc, and has also obtained many high level scientific achievements.

In the sector of ocean engineering, incorporated with a variety of practical project, many types of drilling and production platforms gave been studied and developed for years, such as the bottom-supported living and powering platform, the shallow water modular platform. Cheng bei 11A wells and the offshore oil field floating production system, thus contributing to the exploration and production of shallow water oil. At the same time, the theory of platform designing gas been expanded and the practical experiences enriched. Particularly, the extreme shallow water walkable bottom-supported platform ‘Victory II’, jointly developed with Shingle oil field, was appraised as one of the Top Ten National Scientific Achievements In 1992 and awarded the First Prize of Science. And Technology Advancement within the Petroleum Ministry of China, the Golden Medal of the International Fair and the Second Prize of National Inventions.

In the sector of ship design and new ship type development, more than 40 ships have been developed and designed, among which the following ships are still in use: car ferry, 700dwt large hatch collier, high speed traffic boat, patrol boat, pleasure boat, tug, floating crane, 5000dwtocean going cargo ship,11000dwt coastal timber carrier, 10000dwt class shallow-draft, full ship 1500 berth coastal passenger catamaran, 300 berth inland water way passenger catamaran,1000~1500dwt class river-ocean cargo ships,100TEU container ship, single engine mated twinpropeller tug, etc., thus making a contribution to the development of the national ship-building industry. In addition, following researches were also carried out: 1000~3000TEUlarge container ships, 238000dwt tanker, 120000dwt barge carrier, 10000dwt ultra-shallow-draft full ship, 150000dwt single engine mated twin-propeller shallow-draft tanker, high performance ship, etc.

In the aspect of advanced manufacturing technology in shipbuilding, efforts are devoted to the implementation of group technology, modular design and modular construction. So far as CAD is concerned, there is a computer aides ship design laboratory which has developed a lot of software these years, such as the integrated systems for ocean going cargo ship design and for multi-purpose cargo ship design, mathematical hull lines design, ship performances calculation and computer aided plotting. The National Education Council enlarged its investment the laboratory's capability of CAD/CAM gets on anew stage.

In the aspect of technology-economy analysis and design optimization of water transport system, such as the shipping system of imported phosphate, research tasks of many practical shipping systems were entrusted with, The macro-analysis of Yangtze River ship types and so on have provided the relevant departments of the State with an important basis for their decision making.

Following project offers are mostly: Preliminary design, detailed design and work drawling design for all types of merchant or navy ships, Research on and development of new ship types, CAD of merchant or navy ships, Calculation and analysis of merchant or navy ship performances, Reliability verification and engineering design of various offshore structures and design of various ocean engineering ships, Research on outfitting and painting technologies for all types of ships and platforms, Research on and development of shipbuilding group technology and production design in shipyards.

Institute of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Structural Mechanics

Institute of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Structural Mechanics (SNAOESM) is developed from the Division of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Structural Mechanics .Now it has a faculty of 28 among which 20 are professors, associate professors or senior engineers, and 4 professors are/were members or chairman of ISSC technical sub-committee.

Authorized by the National Academic Degrees Committee. INAOESM offers doctor degree programs and master degree programs, and has formed the first engineering doctor and first woman-engineering doctor in Shanghai. In 1988,it was approved to be the national key subject, and in 1989 it was appointed to be post-doctorate station. Up to now, it has formed more than 100 masters, more than 30 doctors and several post-doctor fellows.

SNAOESM attaches great importance to developing scientific research activities, including both basic theory and applied technology. Its research scope has being enlarged and adjusted in the last decades, and covers nearly all aspects relevant to naval architecture and ocean engineering, such as ship, submarine, submersible ocean platform, pipe engineering, shore structure etc. presently, the main research directions in SNAOESM are structural dynamics, fluid-structure interaction analysis, computational structural mechanics, fracture and fatigue, optimization for engineering structure, reliability analysis for engineering structure, plastic limit analysis for structure, structure strength, structure test technology etc.. In 90’s,alot of research projects are undertaken, and most of them are supported by the National Natural Science Foundation, the Nation Defense Science and Technology Committee. China Shipbuilding Company and some other big enterprises. Many analysis codes on different ship and ocean engineering structures have been developed, such as the prediction system of structural strength., vibration and stress analysis for large container ship; structural optimization design and analysis system for large tanker; FEM analysis integration system for large tanker; analysis system for the direct design method on ship structure; strength analysis system for submersible ocean platform; fault diagnose expert system for ocean platform; prediction system for the vibration of warship stern etc.

The research projects in SNAOESM also come from other industry domain for example navigation, satellite, civil skyscraper, waters conservancy engineering. Recently many research tasks related to national key project have been undertaken, such as the study on the dynamic math model for ship lifting of Three Gorges in Yangzi River; the whole static analysis for YUN-7 airplane; study on the strength of high voltage wire; strength and vibration analysis for the Santana car.

The institute has a modern and advanced structural mechanics laboratory. In the middle of 80's, the laboratory facility was extended. A structural static and dynamic loading system MTS (US) was introduced. Conjugated with two-4900KN/cm2 high-pressure tanks and 9m*15m test platform, the in-time control and analysis with 2 channels can be realized, by which, static dynamic and fatigue tests for large structures can be carried out. Beside, other facilities for experiment include two set instruments of photoelasticity, two sets of data gathering system, electric magnetic exciters from 9.8N to 490N, etc.

In 90's, with the renewing of the structural mechanics laboratory, new equipment and instrument are introduced, including some advanced computer station. ZONIC system of structural dynamic signal gathering and analysis in-time with multi-channel, stimulation device for the multi-freedom sloshing of tanker, static strain gages instrument with multi-channel, portable static strain gage instrument, and many modern structural analysis codes (such as MSC/NASTRAN, MSC/DYTRAN, SYSNOISE, SESAM, SAFEHULL, SHIPREGHT, ANAYSYS etc.). And a comprehensive test and analysis system is formed.

Up to now, more than 20 monographs and textbooks are issued and hundreds scientific papers are published in relevant academic journal. The following research projects are awarded.

The Institute of Ship and Ocean Engineering Hydrodynamics(Ship Hydrodynamics Laboratory)

The Institute of Ship and Ocean Engineering Hydrodynamics is one of the doctor ‘s degree programs in the first batch approve by the State Council, and is a member of the Advisory Council of International Towing Tank Conference. The institute is engaged in basic and applied research of hydrodynamic characteristics in naval architecture, ocean engineering, port and water conservancy engineering, petrochemical industry, electric, civil and environmental engineering. The research work is focused on computational method, software development and experimental technique, training of highly qualified scientific and technical as well as management personnel .It is the earliest base of education, research and experimental equipment and instrument development in ship and ocean engineering hydrodynamics field in China with a history as long as 37 years.

There are 10 staff members in the institute, including 6 professors (5 doctor advisers among them), 2 associate professors, 1 lecturer and 1 assistant. The institute has compiled or written more than 20 textbooks of undergraduate and graduated level in shipbuilding.10~20 papers are presented or published at conferences and/or in magazines at home and abroad every year. The institute undertakes 10~20 contract projects of basic and applied research, new product development from different state ministries, research institutes, industries annually.

It has accepted several visiting scholars and research cooperators from Japan and Sweden and has sent 8 persons, more than 30 person-times, abroad to lecture, study, or to take part in joint research projects or supervise graduates.

The research or production projects undertaken by the institute from related ministries have made a positive contribution to the academic level and industrial development. For example, the research of wave loading of a offshore platform and its motion response, the floating transportation, barge transportation and launching research of jacket, the capsizing mechanism of offshore platform, the experimental research on hydrodynamic coefficients of manned or unmanned submersibles, the experimental research and simulation of ship maneuverability, the orthogonal experimental research of the rudder form with high effectiveness, the research of ship energy saving methods, the research on utilization of wave energy as hydrodynamic force and wave power generation installation, theoretical investigations into unsteady propeller performance prediction, research on the highly skewed controllable pitch propeller with minimum excitation forces, the computer software development of 3-D source distribution of wave loading for large scaled objects. Particularly, researches on high speed boat performance, large full ship forms, ducted propeller with simplified profile and controllable pitch propeller series, anti-rolling tanks, propeller excitation forces as well as cavitation noise and erosion of submarines and other ship propellers have achieved great success. The institute has won more than 30 advanced science and technology awards from the State Council and its ministries.

The institute has close relationship with towing tank, cavitation tunnel and ocean basin in our college. Experimental investigations can be carried out jointly.

The institute is able to provide following technical services:
    Theoretical investigations and software development of hydrodynamic performances for naval architecture and ocean engineering or other engineering structures.

Underwater Engineering Research Institute

The Underwater Engineering Research Institute was founded in 1986. Its predecessor was Teaching & Research Section of Underwater Vehicle Design & Construction and Deep Submergence Research Division. The Institute is divided into General Design Research Division, Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Research Division, Deep Submergence Laboratory, etc. Its subordinate Nan Yang International Underwater Engineering Inc. Serves as a window and bridge connecting both domestic and foreign markets.

The Institute has formed a technical echelon with high theoretical background and strong scientific research capability, including 6 professors, over 10 associate professors and senior engineers, 15 lecturers and engineers, and several technicians and senior workers. As one of the influential research and development bases of submersibles and underwater engineering both at home and abroad, the Institute has not only rich experience in general design, performance and structure of submersibles, but also quite good capability in the research of mechanical & electrical equipment of submersibles. Its 2000m deep sea environmental simulation installation and 40Mpa high pressure chamber can be used for research and development of submersibles’ various equipment and structure and it’s submersible maneuverability testing tank for research and experiment of submersibles’ performance. Marine Human Engineering Laboratory which is now in construction will undertake research in human factors and operation characteristics.

The Institute also offers both undergraduate and graduate programs (for doctoral and master degrees).

The main research and design areas are as follows: research and design of manned submersibles; ROVs and other underwater work systems; research and design of structure, performance, mechanical & electrical equipment of underwater carriers; reliability of ship systems, marine human engineering, etc..

The Institute was the major participant and technically responsible unit in the design and development of China’s first manned submersible. Since the reform and opening of our country, the Institute has made a break-through progress in the development and research of ROVs in cooperation with partners both at home and aboard. It has developed China’s first ROV "HR-01", ROVs of observation "JH-01", "SJT-5", 6000m deep sea observation system, ROVs of workhorse "SJT-10", "SJT-40", etc.. There ROVs are widely used in offshore oil exploration and in the inspection of inland reservoirs, river dams and submarine pipelines and highly appraised by customers.

The Institute has successfully developed various underwater hi-tec products, such as manned submersibles, ROVs, submarine cable burying devices, etc., among which the manned submersible "7103" has won National First Grade Prize for Scientific & Technological Achievement of China; ROV "JH-01" won Third Grade Prize for Scientific & Technological Achievement of Water Conservancy Ministry; other projects, such as "Mine-lifting devices", "Software for submarine Design", "Deepsea Envionmental Simulation Installation" have won the prize for Scientific and Technological Achievement of Navy and former Ministry of No.6 Machine Building Industry. "MG-1" Submarine Cable Burying System designed and developed by the Institute has won the Third Prize for Scientific and Technological Achievement of Ministry of Post and Telecommunication.

Areas for cooperation include:
    Research and development of various manned submersibles ROVs and other underwater installations;
    Design and contracting of various underwater working systems and surface supporting equipment;
    Contracting of research development, experiment, computation and consultation of ship and ocean engineering projects;
    Training of ship and ocean engineering operators and R&M personnel.

Institute of Harbor and Hydraulic Engineering

The Institute was established in 1989. It is mainly based on the specialty of coastal and oceanographic engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. With the development of national economic construction, a great many coastal and oceanographic engineering projects (e.g. harbors, navigational channels, bridges, wave breaker, reclamation, shipyard, artificial islands, seabed oil pipelines, power plants, oil platforms, coastal defense and coastal and oceanographic pollution, etc.) are being undertaken. The international community has paid increasing attention to the exploration and usage of coastal and marine resources, forming a new subject known as “coastal oceanography”.

The institute has undertaken a lot of scientific and technological research projects.(For example, Three Gorges shifter, dynamic analysis of submarine pipeline, etc.).Currently, the institute is undertaking research projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation, the State Education Committee, and the Shanghai Scientific and Technologic Committee. The main research fields of the institute are:
    Coastal and estuarine hydrodynamics (wave, current sea level and salt water intrusion)
    Coastal, estuarine and offshore sediment processes
    Coastal, estuarine and oceanic pollution
    The designation and construction of coastal architectures, including harbor, dock, etc.
    Coastal and estuarine evolution and regulation of navigational channels
    Reclamation of tidal flat
    The new technology and methods of coastal and estuarine field measurement.

The State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering

The State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering in Shanghai Jiao Tong University which is authorized by the state authorities concerned, is mainly composed of four divisions as the ocean engineering basin, the ship model towing tank, cavitation tunnel and structure dynamic loading system. The aim of the laboratory is to promote the development of naval architecture and ocean engineering.

The work of the State Key Laboratory Ocean Engineering is managed by the director it and appraised by the academic committee which is composed of famous experts of ocean engineering. There are now 34 staff members in the laboratory, including 12 professors, 4 assistant professors and 18 engineers.

The facilities owned by the laboratory enable researchers to conduct investigations in various aspects such as hydrodynamic loads, motions and structural dynamic responses of ships and ocean engineering structures under the influence of various environmental conditions, the mechanism of the cavitation erosion and noise of propulsive devices and hydrofoils, the maneuverability of shallow-draft ships, the loading capacity and dynamic analyses of various structures. Hence, the research scope of the laboratory covers several main aspects in naval architecture, ocean engineering and underwater technology ,for instance, hydrodynamics, structural mechanics,design and technological development.

The State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering is a laboratory for public use. Both domestic and overseas research scholars and engineering experts engaged in the previously mentioned research fields are encouraged and welcome to carry out cooperative research programs in the laboratory. The laboratory is also willing to undertake vital research projects entrusted by domestic or overseas organizations on the practical engineering problems concerning the exploitation lf offshore oil and gas, deep-sea mining, shipping and shipbuilding industries.

The ocean engineering basin, which is the main part of the State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering’s 50m in length, 30m in width and 6m in depth. Various ocean environments can be simulated in the basin. The main equipment are as follows:
(1) Powerful hydraulic wave maker of dual-flap type, by which both regular and irregular long crest waves can be generated with the maximum wave height up to 0.6m.
(2) Wind generating system with axial fans, with the maximum wind speed up to 10m/s.
(3) A large area false bottom (28m*26m), by means of which the water depth can be adjusted between 0 and 5m with the adjusting rate of 3m/hr.
(4) Large span X-Y direction towing carriage, with maximum speed of 1.0m/s
