The School of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering
takes the training of qualified personnel in multi-level as one of its main tasks. Besides
the undergraduate programs in corresponding specialties, master and doctor programs have
been established in the related departments and institutes as well as a post-doctorate
program at the school level. Carrying forward the fine tradition of Jiao Tong University
for education, the School devotes much attention not only to training of students in basic
theory and practical experience, but also to the training of students in quality and
ability. Emphasis is laid on strengthening the relevant disciplines and the formation of
qualified teacher teams in the School. Academic research echelons with rational age
composition, led by well-known professors, have been formed in each corresponding branch
of learning.
In order to adapt to the development of the shipbuilding industry and the
exploitation of the ocean, extensive basic and applied researches have been actively
carried out in the School. The School is also engaged in the corresponding industrial
application and development and undertakes many vital research projects for projects for
related state ministries and industrial enterprises actively. The research scope of the
School covers many important areas, for example, merchant ship and warships, exploitation
and production of ocean oil, harbor and coastal engineering, ocean environment and
protection, etc.
The School pays great attention to the international academic exchange
and scientific research cooperation. The School has become a member of the International
towing Tank Conference (ITTC) since 1978 and a member of Advisory Council of ITTC since
1987. Two professors of the School are the technical committee members of the
International Ship and Offshore Structure Conference (ISSC). Good relationship for
academic and personnel exchanges has been established between our School and a lot of

of Ship Engineering was established in 1943 while the specialty of Onshore & Offshore
Engineering (formerly named as Ocean Engineering) in 1985. For more than 50 years since
its founding, the Department has trained a great amount of senior technical and
administrative personnel for the different departments of our country, such as the
shipbuilding industry, the Navy of P.L.A. the National Defense Committee of Science and
Industry, the offshore oil industry, the classification society and the communication and
transportation industries.
The Department has a high qualified faculty and abundant facilities,
and employs a number of internationally or nationally famous professors represented by
Prof. Yang You, an academician of the Academy of Science of China.
In addition to the two undergraduate specialties, the Department also offers two master
and doctor stations. i.e. the Design and Manufacture of Ship & Offshore Structure, the
Mechanics of Engineering, and a post-doctorate station of the former.
The Department pays attention to the training of students in
fundamental knowledge. Besides the study of professional knowledge, the students are also
offered special courses in management knowledge, computer skill and foreign language
abilities. Through a whole set of teaching and learning practices, the students can have a
good understanding of the society, be familiar with the production and value the
integration of theory with practice.
The length of undergraduate schooling in the department is four years. During the
university time, the students have 34~40 obligatory courses, 12~15 elective courses and 6
courses in moral education.
The graduates from the Department are mainly engaged in various ships and offshore
structures research, design, production, survey and trade. They can also undertake
shipping management, offshore oil and gas exploration, etc.
In addition, the Department has been authorized to train engineering masters for the large
sized national enterprises. An engineering mastership station has recently been
established in Dong Ying, a city in Shan Dong Province, and has formally enrolled students
from Shen Li Petroleum Administration.
