School of Mechanical and Power Energy Engineering

Introduction

In 2002,  the School of Mechanical Engineering and  the School of Power and Energy Engineering united into The School of Mechanical and Power Energy Engineering.

Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest subjects in SJTU. In 1913, Jiao Tong University's Electrical & Mechanical Department was expanded, both Electrics and Mechanics were taught. From then on, "Mechanical Engineering, Jiao Tong University" came into being. JTU established a department and formed the major of Mechanical Engineering in 1921, thus Jiao Tong University's Mechanical Engineering was formally founded. It has been 80 years since then. The school enjoys a high reputation in the world and cultivated many famous scholars including Qian Xuesen and more than 10 members of Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Academy of Engineering. During its 80 years' history, it used such names as Mechanical Subject, School of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Machine Manufacturing, Department of Mechanical Engineering. The Mechanical Engineering School was founded in 1997. It is an important base to cultivate high-level talents in advanced machinery manufacturing, controlling, modern design, auto engineering and engineering administration. The School's "Advanced Manufacturing Technology" has been listed as one of 6 key subjects in "211 Project".

The School of Power and Energy Engineering, founded in June 1997, grew out of the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering that established in 1908 and was one of the firsts that offered postgraduate program. Faculty members are not only renowned professors of great attainments but also dedicated young scholars who remain current in their field. There are 36 professors including the academician of Engineering Professor Weng Shilie, 67 associate professors and senior engineers, 28 advisors for Ph.D. The School is structured with eight departments and institutes, and 2 postdoctoral flowing stations for the further pursuit of doctor-degree obtainer. In addition, there are 2 state-supported disciplines and 9 majors which grant master and doctor degrees: power mechanics and engineering, engineering thermal physics, refrigeration and low temperature engineering, heat energy engineering, fluid mechanics and engineering, turbine engineering, hydro acoustic engineering, nuclear science and engineering, mechanical design and theory (of vibration, shock and noise). Particularly, the laboratory of vibration, shock and noise is a state-supported lab. the School offers three undergraduate specialties: heat energy and power engineering, nuclear technology and engineering, environmental engineering. It's further divided into two sections: fundamentals as well as power, energy and environmental engineering, focusing on engineering thermophysics, mechanics and applicable technology of computer. The academic program is such designed to encourage the students to grasp fundamentals firmly, to broaden their view, to stimulate originality, and be prepared for variety of career opportunities. For years, the School has undertaken numbers of state projects and other assignments, for instance, by "863 Plan", National Security, State Natural Science Foundation, provinces and ministries from which the achievements are respectable and substantial. Meanwhile it has built up close contacts with other countries. Particularly, it's established SJTU-SAIC (Shanghai Auto Industry Company) Vehicle Engine Center, the Center of Vehicle Air Conditioner, SJTU-GM Institute of Auto Power Technology, SJTU-SUN Manufacturing Imitation Laboratory. Lately the School is carrying on "Power Engineering and Resource Utilization" of "211 Project".
