programs of the first grade subject of Materials Science and Engineering. The
first subject comprises three second subjects of Materials Physics and Chemistry,
Materials Science and Materials Processing Engineering. All of
them can offer the doctorate degree, master degree and master degree of engineering. The
original subject of Metallic Materials and Heat Treatment from Materials
Science was the key subject of higher education. The project of the Advanced
Composite Materials and High Temperature Materials was included in the 211
Engineering of the key subject construction.
The faculty is a diverse group of about 217 members. There are 121
teachers, among which there are 29 professors (2 Academician of Chinese Academy of
Science, 22 doctorate supervisors), 52 associate professors and 30 lectures. There are
also 9 chief engineers equivalent to professor, 21 senior engineers, 24 engineers, 38
technicians and workers.
The school has 88 graduate students for master degree, 75 doctorate
candidates and 480 students. There are 40 courses and 15 experimental courses for

The faculty of the school includes many rich
experienced old scholars whose reputation has been distinguished, many middle- and
young-aged staffs, who received the doctorate degree and post-doctorate research programs,
being a mainstay in teaching and scientific research. The State Key Laboratory for
Metallic Matrix Composite Materials, the Open Laboratory for High Temperature Materials
and Tests, the Foundry Laboratory, the Welding Laboratory, and so on, occupies 7500 m2 and
offer excellent equipment and instruments for scientific research.
The school have been undertaking projects on grants from the National
Natural Science Foundation, the National "863" projects and the National 6th-5
year projects , 7th-5 year projects, 8th-5 year projects and 9th-5 year key projects. In
addition, they carried out a lot of projects of research, development and consultation
service collaborated with enterprises. The annual finance of the school for scientific
research arrived at 14 million. The school is very active in the field of Materials
Science and Engineering. Lots of research achievements reached at or surpassed the
international advanced level. Since 1978, the school achieved above 120 prizes of
scientific and technological progress, among which there were 7 National Invention Prizes,
8 Prizes of National Scientific and Technological Progress, 1 Prize of National Natural
Science and 91 Prizes of Scientific and Technological Progress of Shanghai and of
Ministry.

Program for undergraduate students
Since 1998, the students in the School of Materials Science and
Engineering began to study for Bachelor degree in the subject of Materials Science
and Engineering. An emphasis is focused on the basic knowledge in the lectures and
the cultivation of creative ability for students. In order to extend the specialty
knowledge, inorganic nonmetallic and polymer materials science is introduced in the
courses for students, and the cultivation of complex persons is emphasized. In
setting of courses, there are total 2500 hours of lectures within 4 years. The hours of
lectures per week are less than 23 hours in year 1 and 2, and less than 21 hours in year 3
and 4. The percentage of lecturing hours of common basic courses and special basic courses
are about 70%; the percentage of selected special courses with a limitation in the school
are about 15~18% and the selected courses without limitations in the university are
12~15%. The CAI are extensively adopted in teaching methods. The emphasis is on raising
specialty interests and lecturing effects. The students are encouraged to continue their
study for the Double Degree, Master Degree and Master Degree of Engineering.
Program for graduate students
According to the "Specialty Index and Program on Cultivation of
Graduate Students and Leading to the Doctorate Degree and Master Degree" issued by
the National Committee of Assessing Academic Degree for Candidates and the Education
Ministry and combining with the practical issues in the school, the cultivating programs
for doctorate candidates and graduate students for Master Degree and Master Degree of
Engineering have been set.
The principles of "Science, Creation, Extended and Multi-level"
are demonstrated in research fields. The original character and superiority in research
areas of the school are maintained while the advanced research fields are established
according to the developing trends of subjects with special attention to the joint and
frontier of the materials science fields.
