Aetna school of Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong
University (SJTU) was originally named as the School of Management, SJTU. The School
boasts its long history. It originates from the Management Department founded in 1918. The
School of Management was officially established in 1931, when there were four departments
of Railway Management, Financial Management, Industrial Management and Business
Administration. By 1949,the School had consisted of four departments of Transportation
Management, Financial Management, Telecommunication Management and Shipment Management.
In 1954, the School was once disbanded. The present School of Management
was rebuilt on June 12th, 1984. On April 7,1996,when SJTU was celebrating its Centennial
year, Aetna International Inc. (AII) and SJTU signed an agreement. AII decided to
collaborate with SJTU to restructure Aetna School of Management, SJTU. On April 8, 2000,
the School of Management, SJTU was formally renamed Aetna School of Management, SJTU, a
School affiliated to SJTU.
The school has its consultant committee. Mr. Wang Daohan, former mayor of
Shanghai Municipality, is the director.
Aetna School of Management consists of Department of Enterprise
Management, Department of Enterprise Management and Decision-Making Science, Department of
International Business, Department of Tourism Management, Department of Accounting and
Finance, Department of Management Science and Engineering, Department of Finance, Research
Institute of Human Resources Management, Continuing Education & Training Center. The
School also has a SJTU & Reuters International Financial Workshop.
Presently, the School has 7 majors, including Management Science and
Engineering, Enterprise Management, Technological Economics and Management, International
Trade, Tourism Management, Accounting and Finance. Among them, there are 7 master programs
and one MBA program, 2 Doctoral Program and 1 post-doctoral station.
From 1979 to 2000, more than 4400 students graduated from the School,
including over 3300 undergraduates, over 1100 master students and over 100 Ph. D.
Students.
Currently, there are more than 2600 students on campus. Among them, there
are about 1500 undergraduates, about 1000 master-degree students (MBA students included )
and more than 130 doctoral students.
In addition, more than 10 post-doctoral candidates have been working at
the station of Management Science and Engineering and 10 of them have accomplished their
research here.
Education quality of the school comes out in front in the field of
management among universities in Shanghai. For twice the School was awarded the first
prize in Comprehensive Evaluation of Education Quality of Management Disciplines
among Universities is Shanghai.
Since 1979, the School continuously held various degree or non-degree
training programs for more than 70 times and accepted more than 3,000 trainees. The School
organizes some of these training programs independently and the rest are co-organized with
universities in such regions and countries as Hong Kong, Germany, Singapore, Canada and
Japan.
Since 1979, the School of Management has completed more than 200 research
projects, either independently or jointly with other universities and institutions. 21 of
them are funded by the National Natural Science Foundation 45 by other ministries and
departments, 52 by various provincial and municipal governments, 29 are international
joint-projects, 66 are lateral projects and 18 are other projects. The projects concerned
about various fields in the national economic development and social progress. So far,
many prizes have been achieved including First Prize of Science Progress awarded by the
National Education Committee, National Science Progress Prize and First Prize of Science
progress awarded by the Shanghai Municipal Government.
Since 1979, more than 70 works and about 600 papers have been published.
Among them, over 300 papers were published in the national first-grade magazines and
overseas academic journals.
Early at its preparatory stage, the school has got support form the
University of British Columbia, Canada and the University of Pennsylvania, USA and
established a long-term cooperative relationship with them. So far, the School is very
proud of its exchange and cooperation with many universities and research institutes in
North America, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong. Scholastic or
educational exchange has been carried out in wide range.
Currently the School has a faculty of 156 members including 20 full
Professors and 57 Associate Professors.
Today Aetna School of Management is taking great efforts to fulfill its
vision of being recognized as a leading school in Asia an being well known in the world.
