The college stresses on the cultivation of high-caliber
students. 90 Members form the faculty team, including 1 member of Chinese Academy of
Engineering, 44 professors, 1 Yangtzi Scholar. The college boasts a group of recognized
scholars as well as young research leaders standing at the edge of bio-x science. Several
of them won national awards for elite youth.
Fruitful achievements have been accomplished in
teaching and research. Important outcomes have been achieved in the fields of 1) medical
equipment, 2) nourishments of health care, 3) medicine, 4) biological technology, several
of which were awarded the National prize for Advancement of Science & Technology.
Among them, 'Onlly One',an health care product enjoys a high international fame.
Equipment of Smashing Kidney Stones Outside Body once achieved the first prize
of National Advancement of Science & Technology. The college undertakes several
national key projects in '863' and '973'. Over 10 projects are funded by National Natural
Scientific Foundation and some projects are Shanghai Scientific Committee and Agricultural
Committee. Recently, the School has further strengthened international exchange and has
cooperation in teaching and research with institutions in US, France, UK Germany,
Australia, etc.
Life Science has been listed as a subject that should be developed
stressfully and preferentially. Large amount of sustentation has been obtained from '985
Project'. Excellent young scholars and research leaders have been introduced into the
college in the past several years. Research are focused on the cutting-edge fields such as
:DNA chips, Disease Genome & Medical Genome, NanoBiology, BioInformatics, BioMedicine,
Molecular Ecology, Biomedical Engineering, and so on. Moreover, many important outcomes
have been achieved.
Bio-X, the multidisciplinary research center for life science was founded
in April, 2000, to foster a closer interaction of Life Science and Mathematics, Physics,
Chemistry, Computer Science so as to make substantial breakthrough in the fields of Life
Science. Professor Steven Chu, Professor of Stanford University and Nobel laureate, pays
much attention to the establishment and development of the center. He visited the
university and discussed with university leaders and researchers of Bio-X center in
August, 2000.
The School of Life Science & Technology pushes
subjects' cross and amalgamation in the light of the characteristic of science combining
with engineering, in accordance with the universitys development layout. It
accelerates constructing a base of Life Science & Technology with high level. It is
devoting to forming its own strength and characteristic in the amalgamation of Life
Science and Engineering, cultivating persons with high quality, and gaining outcomes with
high level.
TANG Zhangcheng, male, was born in, January, 1941 in
Shanghai. He graduated from Department of Biology, Nankai University in 1963. Then, he got
the admission and was matriculated by Institute of Botanic Physiology, Chinese Academy of
Science. Mr. Luo Shiwei, famous cell biologist and botanic physiologist of our country,
was his tutor. Tang Zhangcheng graduated with a master's degree in 1967 and has stayed at
Institute of Botanic Physiology, Chinese Academy of Science, till now. 1980.5-1982.5, he
did research at School of Life Science and School of Agriculture, the University of
Wisconsin, as a visiting scholar.
He has participated in or organized the research mostly of Botanic
Environment Engineering for the over past 30 years. He especially researched on the
affects on the plants' growing and developing of adverse environment, such as drought,
salt, flood, unfavorable temperature, near-zero gravity. He also researched on plants'
anti-adversity mechanism. These researches involve the composition, structure, function of
botanic cellular velum, the ability of cell's osmotic adjustment, and the relationship
between plant hormone and plants' anti-adversity. Due to the significance of the research
he has participated in and organized, they were awarded the prize by the National Science
Conference, Chinese Academy of Science, Shanghai Municipal government and Science &
Engineering Committee of National Defence. Tang Zhangcheng has published more than 80
theses in domestic and oversea academic publications such as Science in China, Science
Bulletin, Physiol Plant, Plant and Soil. He has cultivated several doctors.
Tang Zhangcheng currently holds the posts of 1) Dean of Shanghai branch
of Chinese Academy of Science, 2) Head of Shanghai Institute of Botanic
Physiology(adjunct), 3) Committee Member of National Scientific Association, 4) Vice
President of Shanghai Scientific Association, 5) Director of Chinese Botanic Physiology
Association, and 6) Delegate of the 9th National People's Congress.
Vice Dean of the School
LIN Zhixin, male, was born in January, 1947. He is a professor and a
tutor for doctor candidates. He graduated from Biochemistry & Microbiology of Biology
Department, Fudan University in 1968. In 1979, he was matriculated by Virus Science of
Biology Department, Fudan University. Professor Wang Mingqi, famous scientist of botanic
virus, was his tutor. He got a maters degree in 1982. He worked at the research room
of Virus Science, Fudan University, from 1982 to 1988. He came to Shanghai Jiao Tong
University in 1988 and has worked here up to now. During this period, he was once engaged
in the cooperating science research in American Cornell University and Louisiana
University as an advanced visiting scholar in 1993.
He has been mostly engaged in the research of Molecular Genetics,
Applying Microbiology, DNA CMOS chip for the last 20 years. He has taken on and fulfilled
several projects of national natural scientific fund, national science & technology
tackling key problems, and Shanghai scientific development fund. He finished the monograph
Research & Application of Photosynthetic Bacterial . He is now mainly occupied by an
important project of City's Science Committee' Manufacture & Application of DNA CMOS
chip'. More than 20 theses have been published in such publications as 1) Newspaper of
Genetics, 2) Transactions of Biochemistry & Biophysics, 3) Agricultural Transactions
of Shanghai, 4) Transactions of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The undergraduate program
he gives is 'General Situation of Modern Times' Biology', master program are 'Chemistry of
Protein & Multi Peptide' and 'Conspectus of Gene Engineering' and otherwise. He has
