School of Humanities and Social Science

Background

The School of Humanities and Social Science was established in January, 1997, amalgamated by two departments: 1) Social Science & Engineering Department, 2) Literature & Art Department, which were initially set up in 1985. This School consists of 3 departments:Culture Administration, History of Science & Philosophy of Science, Administration Management & Politics; 3 research institutes, including: Philosophy & Public Policy, Education in Ideology & Politics and Ethnics, Science & Technology and Society Development. In addition, there are several multidisciplinary research organizations: Research Center of Public Policy, Research Center of Intellectual Property, Research Institute of Social Engineering and Research Institute of Knowledge Economy.

Faculty & students

The School possesses a strong instruction team. It has a faculty of 115 full-time teachers, including 20 professors (3 doctor tutors included).

Meanwhile, the School has invited some famous experts and scholars to be part-time professors, such as Gao Zhanxiang, Li Wenhai, Li Xueqin, Xi Zongze, Zhang Qizhi, Xie Jin, Wu Yigong, Yu Qiuyu, Cao Jianming, Cao Peng, Cheng Shifa, Cheng Ji and Anson Chen. Philosophy, politics, economics, law, sociology, history, literature, administration management, news broadcasting, literature & art are involved in the fields of their teaching and research.

There are 470 full-time students in this school now. About 150 students graduate from the school annually.

Some teachers were awarded the title of “Excellent Teacher of Shanghai”. Four enrollments of students have graduated from the two majors: 1) International Economical Law, 2) Cultural Administration. The graduates are highly popular with all kinds of companies. The employment rate was 100 percent.

The teachers in charge of music education of School's Education Center of Cultural Quality take on the routine training tasks of Jiao Tong University's Art Group. Under direct guidance of Cao Peng, a famous compere, the university's orchestra is now on a high level. It has been awarded many times in National University Students' Art Competition. In 1996, the orchestra was formally named by the Municipal Art Educational Committee as University Students' Orchestra of Shanghai. Such work has created a thick cultural atmosphere within Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The School also frequently invites some famous experts and scholars inside and outside the university to give series of liberal lectures, which is very popular among the students.

The School has formed a teaching system with Jiao Tong University's characteristic, in which science is combined with humanities, art is infiltrated into science and engineering course, after several years' continuous inplementation. All specialties emphasize training in foreign languages and computer manipulation. It also cultivates the students' innovation consciousness and social ability, which makes persons of high quality.

Achievements of Teaching & Research

Since 1990, more than 60 national, provincial and joint research projects have been successfully taken on, more than 150 monographs and teaching materials of a wide span, nearly 1000 papers have been published. The research results were awarded 6 prizes of national grade, 18 prizes of ministry grade. At the same time, they pay much attention to the improvement of the teaching quality and carry out teaching reformation unceasingly. Great success has been achieved. Recently, the School got 2 prizes of the national grade and 8 of the provincial grade for teaching achievements. Some of the curricula have been ranked as first-class of the university.

Academic Exchanges

The School actively carries out national and international academic exchanges. Every year it invites famous experts and scholars from overseas to give speech and teach. What's more, the school has created a long-term cooperating relationship in teaching and research with such institutes as: Harvard Law School, Lee Johnson's Research Center in Cambridge University, School of Public Policy in Birmingham University, School of Law in Waseda University, School of Humanities in Kobe University, School of Social Science in Chinese University of Hongkong, Department of Management in Hongkong Polytechnic.

More than 10 young teachers have been sent to UK, USA, Germany, Japan, Singapore for advanced studies since the School was established. Recently, some doctors, having studied abroad, have been invited to teach in the school.

Facilities

The School has been making great efforts in gaining social support. And it has received several million fund from Nan Huaijin, LuYan, ChengJi as well as Coca-Cola, CATV of Shanghai. This fund is mainly used to establish scholarships and enhance teaching facilities, including 1) Laboratory for Office Automation, 2) Laboratory for Phonetic Teaching, 3) Laboratory for Modern Broadcasting, 4) Laboratory for Digital Art Design, 5) ChengJi Art Gallery. School will soon possess more advanced and comprehensive teaching facilities after the Art Building is finished.

Dean of the School

Professor HU Jin, tutor of master students, born on November 14th, 1957, is from YingShan, Hubei province. He is the Dean of School of Humanities and Social Science, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Hu Jin graduated from the Department of Power Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, in 1980. From 1982 to 1986, he obtained master degree from the specialty of Education in Ideology and Politics. He successively assumed the office of 1) associate secretary of the communist youth league committee, 2) Director of Moral Educational Division, 3) associate Dean of the Department of Social Science and Engineering, 4)minister in charge of propagation of University's Party committee. Since September, 1998, he has been the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Science. He is mostly engaged in such subjects research as 1) Education in Ideology and Politics, 2) Ethnics, 3) Psychology of Management, 4) Comparative Moral Education. The subjects he teaches are 1) Psychology of Management, 2) Comparative Moral Education, 3) Psychology of the Youth, 4) Moral Culture, 5)Psychology of Consultation, and so on. Major composing are 1) Psychology of University Students, 2) How to be a University Student in New Epoch (editor in chief), 3) Psychology Tactic of Public Relationship (editor in chief), 4) Psychology Consultation of Women and Children (editor in chief), 5) Research on Chinese University Students' Value (writing with others). In addition, he edited in chief or participated in editing such teaching materials as Moral Culture. He published more than 70 theses, including Apocalypse of Transmission Psychology on University Students' Patriotism Education (awarded Excellent Thesis Prize in the Third National University's Research of Ideology and Politics), Questing for the Synthetical System of Strengthening University' s Deng Xiaoping's Theory Teaching(awarded the Second Prize of Shanghai's Teaching Production). He successively presided and participated several research projects of National Social & Scientific Fund and Shanghai's Educational Committee. Thereinto, Multicenturial Persons' Quality Optimizing Research of Far Oceanic Company of China won the 1999's first prize of national ministry of personnel's excellent production of science & research. Furthermore, he once successively won Ling Hongxuan Teaching Prize, Yi Lida Teaching Prize and the title of University's Excellent Communist.

Hu Jin is 1) Director of Academy of Chinese Youth, 2) vice president of Youth Psychology Branch, Shanghai's Psychology Academy, 3) assistant chairman of Shanghai's University Moral Association, 4) Director of Academy of City's Ethnics, 5) Director of Academy of City's Women.
