Dean of the School, Prof. WANG Tongshun

Mr. Tongshun Wang graduated from Shanghai International Studies University in 1977. He went to study in the Birmingham University, Britain in 1984 and San Francisco State University, the United States in 1998 respectively, spending one year in each university as a visiting scholar. Professor Wang was Director of Graduate English Teaching Section, the Department of Foreign Languages, SJTU in 1989, Vice-chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages in 1992, Vice Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, SJTU in 1997. He has been Dean of the School of Foreign Languages since December, 1999.

Professor Wang majors in applied linguistics. He is a supervisor for MA programs in applied linguistics. His main interested fields include syllabus design, language testing, discourse analysis, second language acquisition, methodology, etc.. He has long been involved in materials development. In the past few years, he has published “Graduate English Course” (Book 1 & Book 2), (which has won Textbook Award, SJTU) “Graduate English Course—Extensive Reading” (Book 1 & Book 2), “Access to Scientific English”, “Intensive Multi-dimentional Course—Exploring Horizons” & “Intensive Multi-dimentional Course—Approaching Proficiency in Graduate English Series (this series has been listed as one of a few key textbooks to be developed in China in 9th national plan by the Ministry of Education and one of the textbooks for 21st century listed by the Ministry of Education), A Dictionary for Undergraduate and Graduate Students English-English English-Chinese . Professor Wang was also actively involved in the design of the National Graduate English Syllabus and was responsible for the design of English Qualifying Test for Master-degree Applicants and its test syllabus.

Professor Wang won the title of Most Promising Young Teacher in Shanghai in 1991 and 1993 respectively and Municipal Teaching Award in 1993. He is managing director of Graduate Foreign Languages Teaching and Researching Society of China and a member of Academic Committee of Graduate Education Research Society of Shangai.
